Exhibition “Willemstad Liberated from Its Fortress”

In the Orange Room of the Mauritshuis in Willemstad, the Local History Society has organized the exhibition “Willemstad Liberated from Its Fortress: End of Fortress Status, May 28, 1926.” One hundred years ago, on May 28, 1926, a Royal Decree officially ended Willemstad’s status as a fortress. The garrison had already departed in 1922. This had major consequences for Willemstad.

A tourist gem

The exhibition highlights the opportunities that this new era brought. Numerous panels and monitors illustrate how Willemstad has gradually developed into the tourist destination and historic gem it is today, and explain why the fortress and its fortifications can still be admired.

Large model

Highlights of the exhibition include a large scale model of the fortress from 1926 and a large aerial photograph from that period. There is a scavenger hunt in the exhibition for children.

The exhibition was opened by Councilwoman Pauline Joosten and will be on view at the Mauritshuis through the end of October, Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
