Explanatory description

History

De Moerdijkse parochie van Sint Stephanus werd op 29 januari 1859 opgericht door pastoor J.B. de Gier. De nieuwe parochiekerk, gevestigd in een oude schuur van een zekere Jan Merkelbach, werd op 22 maart van het jaar 1861 ingezegend. In 1928 werd begonnen met de bouw van een nieuwe kerk, die op 31 juli 1930 door de Bossche bisschop A. Diepen werd geconsacreerd. Deze kerk ging in 1944 verloren. De klok van deze kerk is bewaard gebleven en in een oorlogsmonument verwerkt. Het monument is onthuld op 4 mei 1985. Bij deze zogenaamde ‘Klokkestoel’ wordt op 4 mei de dodenherdenking gehouden.

Exterior

Het oorlogsmonument de ‘Klokkestoel’ is ontworpen door J. Schreurs en is van hout, met een leien schilddakje en geschulpte lijst. De klok is van de eerste kerk van Moerdijk en het monument is voorzien van een plakkaat met het opschrift:

MIJN KLANK EN VRIJ MOERDIJK
LEKEN IN STRIJD VERLOREN
MAAR WIE NAAR MIJ WIL HOREN
BLIJFT IN BEVRIJDING RIJK

Het object is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als herinnering aan WOII en de ontstaansgeschiedenis van Moerdijk. Het heeft kunsthistorische waarde omdat het monument is gemaakt met de klok van de eerste kerk van Moerdijk.
