Explanatory description

History

Villa Waterloo is the former director’s residence of the Azelma sugar factory, the first sugar factory in the Netherlands. From 1905 onward, the building served as a girls’ boarding school, and from 1925 to 1978, it served as the town hall of the former municipality of Zevenbergen.

Location

The villa occupies a unique urban location at a central intersection in Zevenbergen, along the old road to Hazeldonk, and in conjunction with the adjacent former coach house.

Architectural and art-historical features:

Exterior

The Waterloo Executive Villa was built in an eclectic style (1870). This means it combines various neo-styles, including Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Renaissance. The building is constructed of brick, plastered, and features a mansard roof with slate shingles and a ridge crest, several dormer windows with pediments, and a weather vane. The facades feature plastered moldings, string courses, and a cornice. The front facade features an entrance flanked by pilasters, surmounted on the first floor by a framed window with pilasters, a pediment, and a balcony. Framed T-shaped windows, some arched, some under round arches. Entrance on the front facade and left side facade with a framed double door, surmounted by a semicircular window, a landing staircase, and balustrades. The side and rear facades are in the same style as the front facade: various murals within frames. The rear facade features a central projection and a modern (later added, non-historic) fire escape. Surrounded by a small park, the former garden with some older trees.

Public Interest

The property is of public interest. It has cultural-historical value as a reminder of the first sugar factory in the Netherlands. It occupies a unique urban location and possesses complex value in combination with the former coach house. It has
