Explanatory description

History

In 1613, the first town hall in Fijnaart was built. It was replaced in 1950 by a new town hall, the current building at Kadedijk 2. The former town hall in Fijnaart was expanded in 1980 and served as the town hall for Fijnaart and Heijningen until 1997. Since 1999, the Lien Museum and Gallery has been located in the building.

Location

The former town hall is located on the dike across from the Dutch Reformed Church and marks the end of the centrally located Voorstaat street.

Architectural and art-historical features:

Exterior

The building was constructed in a historicist style (Traditionalism). Shortly after the war, this was the dominant architectural style for administrative buildings, in which classical and traditional elements were used to establish a connection
with the civil service, which was rooted in tradition and power. Typical stylistic features include landings, towers, and imposing roofs. The former town hall is constructed of brick, consists of two stories, and features a hipped roof covered with tiles. On the roof stand two square
chimneys built of brick and topped with a metal chimney cap bearing two weather vanes. The building’s entrance features a landing with steps on either side, a single door with a transom window (originally featuring a tree of life, which has since disappeared) flanked on both sides by two pilasters. The building also features sliding windows with glazing bars (
) and painted shutters with a (non-original) hourglass motif. The right side facade has three windows and three bricked-up openings.

Public Interest

The property is of public interest. It has cultural-historical value as the former town hall of Fijnaart and Heijningen. It has architectural-historical value as a building in the traditionalist style with various stylistic features from the post-war reconstruction period. It is a defining landmark and occupies a prominent location, situated centrally on the Kadedijk (at right angles to the Voorstraat) as part of the historic village structure.

Protection

The protection applies to the property at Kadedijk 2 in Fijnaart. The main aspects of the
—elements worthy of preservation as historic monuments that are related to the historic values of the entire property—are included in the explanatory description. For the property at Kadedijk 2 in Fijnaart, this concerns relevant elements of the exterior and (parts of) elevations visible from public spaces—in this case, the front elevation (northeast side) and the right-
side elevation (northwest side)—as well as the elements listed in the explanatory description. Future changes or modifications will be assessed against these criteria.
