Explanatory description

History

The Moerdijk Brigade of the Royal Military Police was established on November 7, 1818, and disbanded on March 1, 1943. It was subsequently reestablished on April 9, 1947, and disbanded and closed on October 1, 1954. The so-called KMAR barracks were presumably built in 1928 and were damaged during the war in 1944.

Location

Located on a main road leading to the harbor and between the two churches in Moerdijk.

Architectural and art-historical features:

Exterior

The building consists of two stories and has a composite roof with four chimneys, covered with new tiles. The building is visually divided into three symmetrical sections: there are gables on either side of the building, and the central section consists of a raised facade that extends above the roof ridge. The front and right side facades are flat and constructed of brick without any relief or ornamentation. The (renovated) windows with glazing bars vary in size and are arranged symmetrically, with the exception of the windows in the central section. The entrance is not centered in the building but is located to the left of the center and features a round-arched portico framed by keystones and corbels. The entrance is accessed via a stone staircase topped by a small landing. Two other entrances have since been replaced by windows (ground floor: the second window from the left and the second window from the right).

Public Interest

The property is of public interest. It has cultural and historical value as a rare example of its type, and it is a landmark building.

Protection

The designation applies to the property located at Steenweg 100 and 102 in Moerdijk. The key aspects of the elements worthy of preservation as historic monuments—which are related to the historic values of the entire property—are included in the explanatory description. For the property located at Steenweg 100 and 102 in Moerdijk, this concerns relevant elements of the exterior and (parts of) elevations visible from public spaces—in this case, the front elevation (southwest side) and the right side elevation (southeast side)—as well as the elements mentioned in the explanatory description.
