Foreign driver's license has expired

Did you hold a Dutch driver’s license after October 1, 1986? If so, you can exchange an expired foreign driver’s license immediately. The driver’s license must be valid. A driver’s license from an EU or EFTA country may be expired.

Do you have an expired driver’s license from Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Switzerland? If so, you’ll need a “Certificate of No Objection” from that country.

Driving with a Foreign Driver's License

If you have a driver's license issued outside the EU, you may drive in the Netherlands for up to 185 days. After that, you must exchange your foreign driver's license for a Dutch driver's license.

Lost or stolen driver's license?

Have you lost your driver’s license, and was it not issued in an EU country, an EFTA country, Aruba, or one of the former Netherlands Antilles? If so, you can apply for a new driver’s license at city hall. Please bring the following:

  • A valid form of identification
  • Passport Photo
  • Report of a Missing Person
  • Certificate of Authenticity (request this from the agency that issued the driver's license)

Is this a different country? If so, apply for a new driver's license in the country where your last driver's license was issued. If that doesn't work, you'll have to retake the test in the Netherlands.
