Asbestos Removal

There are strict rules governing the removal and disposal of asbestos. Asbestos can be found in corrugated sheets, linoleum, ceiling panels, drainpipes, roofs, and chimneys, and is a hazardous material. If it breaks or crumbles, carcinogenic substances can be released.

What should you not remove yourself?

• Applications containing asbestos in or on a building that are intended for professional or commercial use;
• Asbestos covering more than 35 square meters. This must be removed by a certified company;
• Asbestos components in a home that may pose a hazard, such as a chimney pipe.

All other applications containing asbestos must be removed by a certified company. You can find companies authorized to perform this work on the Ascert website.

Removing Asbestos Yourself

Most asbestos-containing materials must be removed by a certified asbestos removal company. As a private citizen, you may remove asbestos yourself if it involves:

1. Loose asbestos corrugated sheets on a residence or private building (not used for commercial purposes). The sheets must be screwed in place; they must not be nailed or glued. All sheets must be removed. You may not cut or drill into the sheets. The surface area of the loose and/or screwed-in corrugated sheets is no more than 35 square meters.
2. The plates are not broken or weathered;
3. The surface area of the panels is a maximum of 35 square meters;
4. Loose floor tiles and unglue-down flooring;
5. Loose objects.

These steps must be completed at least 5 days before you remove the asbestos:

1. Submit a demolition notice to the municipality through the Omgevingsloket
2. Include the owner's name, address, and city in the report
3. Indicate in the demolition notice when the asbestos will be removed
4. If approved, you will receive a message confirming that your application has been accepted. That is the approval letter.
5. Add photos of the application and the location where the asbestos is found
6. Do not begin removing the asbestos until you have received permission from the municipality.
7. With this authorization letter, you can pick up free packaging materials at the recycling center, Fuutweg 4, Klundert
8. The packaging material must be airtight and of sufficient strength and thickness to prevent tearing
9. The removed asbestos must be packaged immediately
10. If you do not yet know exactly when the asbestos removal will take place when you submit the demolition notice, please notify the municipality of this date at least two business days before the actual asbestos removal begins. You can do this by emailing info@moerdijk.nl or by calling 14 0168.

Disposing of Asbestos

When you drop off asbestos-containing material at the recycling center, please show your approved notification. A disposal receipt is attached to the notification. If everything is in order, the disposal receipt will be stamped in your presence. You will receive a copy of this. We will retain the other copy for processing in the relevant records.
