A Multidisciplinary Approach to Helping Children Achieve a Healthier Weight
In the Netherlands, about 1 in 8 children is overweight or obese. To provide additional support to these children and their families, the municipality of Moerdijk is joining the national “Kind naar Gezonder Gewicht” (Child to a Healthier Weight) program. This program is designed for children and adolescents ages 2 to 18 who are overweight or obese, along with their families.
Why are we launching "Kind naar Gezonder Gewicht"?
Childhood obesity often has multiple causes. These include genetic predisposition, parenting, the environment in which a child grows up, and the many temptations found online and in stores. It’s not always easy for parents to help their children grow up healthy. We understand that. Parents are often already doing a lot, but could use some extra support. That’s why we’re launching the “Child to a Healthier Weight” integrated approach. We look not only at nutrition and physical activity, but at all possible causes of being overweight.
Who do we work with?
In this approach, various organizations within the municipality work together. For example:
- Pediatric Physical Therapists
- Pediatric Dietitians
- Pediatric Nurses
- Pediatrician
- Community Sports Coaches
- Schools and Child Care
This collaboration ensures a coordinated approach, so that every family receives support tailored to their situation.
What does the approach entail?
The guidance may include:
- Individual support from a pediatric nurse
- Guidance from dietitians, community sports coaches, or other professionals
- Information and tips for the whole family
The goal is to help children and families make healthier choices and receive support in their daily lives.
Costs and Reimbursement
Participation is free. Sometimes you may need help from someone else, such as a specialist. Does that cost money? If so, your primary care provider will always discuss this with your family first. That way, you’ll never be faced with any surprises.

Because lifestyle is a family issue, support for parents is also considered where appropriate. The Combined Lifestyle Intervention (GLI) for adults provides an appropriate next step in the care continuum, so that the entire family can take steps toward a healthier weight.
