Safe Base

Children who attend high school in the municipality of Moerdijk often have to bike long distances. All sorts of things can happen on the way to school: accidents, a broken bike, bullying, or bad weather. The idea behind the “Veilig Honk” project is to provide school-age children with a little extra safety.

At certain locations along their routes to school, children will find “Safe Havens.” A Safe Haven is a home where volunteers live and provide a safe place. They do this by offering short-term assistance to children when they ask for it. Students can recognize a Safe Haven by the sign posted near or on the house.

Terms and Conditions

The "Veilig Honk" project includes a number of important conditions:

  • The municipality is coordinating the project, which involves a partnership between the police, schools, and volunteers from Veilig Honk.
  • Participating volunteers are screened and must provide aCertificate of Good Conduct. In principle, this ensures that the volunteers have no criminal record, which provides an additional safeguard for safety.
