June 19: Open House on Energy Projects

The Netherlands is transitioning to green energy. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy will soon be organizing a series of informational evenings to help you understand this process. Would you like to learn more about five of the energy projects in the municipality of Moerdijk? Then please attend the drop-in session at Hotel De Borgh in Zevenbergen on June 19. You’re welcome to stop by between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.; no registration is required.

On June 19, you can learn more about the projects listed below.

Geertruidenberg–Krimpen or Crayestein High-Voltage Transmission Line

To prevent the power grid from becoming overloaded, an additional high-voltage transmission line will be built between Geertruidenberg and Krimpen aan den IJssel or Crayestein (near Dordrecht). Various options for the route are being explored. Two of the possible routes run through the municipality of Moerdijk. The study proposal for this project (“Draft Scope and Level of Detail Memorandum”) will be available for public review from May 26 through July 6. You may submit your comments. On May 26, TenneT will post an explanatory video on the project page about the current status of the project. It can be found under “Projects” on the TenneT website.

Just Off the Coast, Nederwiek 3

The number of wind farms in the North Sea is growing rapidly. To bring this renewable energy ashore, various offshore grids must also be constructed, through which electricity is transmitted to land via cables. The Nederwiek 3 offshore grid is one of these subsea high-voltage connections. Moerdijk and Geertruidenberg are being specifically evaluated as potential locations where the electricity can come ashore via a subsea cable. An above-ground converter station is required to convert the direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC), which is compatible with the national high-voltage grid. The study proposal for this project (“Concept Scope and Level of Detail Memorandum”) is available for public review from June 2 through July 13. You may submit your comments.

Delta Rhine Corridor

A consortium of international companies plans to develop a number of parallel pipelines for the underground transport of substances (hydrogen, CO2, LPG, propylene, ammonia, natural gas, and possibly direct current). The route runs from Rotterdam through Moerdijk to Chemelot in Geleen and on to the German border. The pipelines in the plan also run through the municipality of Moerdijk. The right-of-way for this pipeline has been included in national policy since 2012 but has not yet been utilized in our municipality. On Friday, May 26, 2023, the exploratory phase of the Delta Rhine Corridor will begin with the publication of the Notice of Intent and the proposal for public participation. You may submit your comments on these documents through Thursday, July 6, 2023. More information is available on the website of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.

Southwest Netherlands Hydrogen Network

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) and Hynetwork Services are developing a nationwide hydrogen network. Part of this is the hydrogen network in the southwestern Netherlands. This will enable industry in this region to become more sustainable through the use of hydrogen. In some areas, new pipelines will need to be installed. In the municipality of Moerdijk, this involves converting existing natural gas pipelines located within the existing pipeline corridor. On April 11, 2023, Hynetwork Services, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, hosted a webinar. The webinar is available for viewing on the website of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency.

Southwest 380 kV East High-Voltage Transmission Line

For some time now, TenneT has been working with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW) on a route for the new 380 kV Southwest East high-voltage transmission line. This connection is necessary because the existing high-voltage transmission line has reached its maximum capacity, while the demand for and supply of renewable electricity are increasing. Without the new high-voltage transmission line, problems with the electricity supply could arise. The permits for this route are currently being prepared. The route runs through the municipality of Moerdijk.
