Free birdhouses and plants for Fijnaart and Zevenbergschen Hoek
Giving nature a helping hand—that’s the goal of the “Nature in the Neighborhood” project, which is launching in the built-up areas of Fijnaart and Zevenbergschen Hoek. With free nest boxes and plants, residents, schools, organizations, and businesses are working together to create a better habitat for birds, bats, and insects.
It is becoming increasingly difficult for wildlife to survive in a village or city. A lack of safe places to nest and a shortage of food are reasons why, for example, you see fewer and fewer pied flycatchers, swifts, and bats. The “Nature in the Neighborhood” project is creating more urban nature and more nesting sites for these species.
In-Home Consultation
In the coming weeks, staff from Natuur in de Wijk will be visiting homes in the built-up areas of Fijnaart and Zevenbergschen Hoek. They will assess whether each home is suitable for a swift box, a pied flycatcher box, and/or a bat box. Every suitable home will receive a flyer in the mailbox with personalized advice and information on how to order free nesting boxes and plants. In November, both villages will host a distribution weekend during which everyone can pick up their ordered plants and nesting boxes and, if needed, receive help installing them.
No flyer, but you can still participate
Even if you don’t receive a flyer but do have a suitable location within the built-up areas of these two villages, you can still participate. This applies not only to residents but also to schools, clubs, and other organizations. For more information and to place an order, visit the Natuur in de Wijk website.
A Greener Moerdijk
"Nature in the Neighborhood" is a project by Orbis and Natuurbalans-Divergens, funded by a grant program from the province of North Brabant aimed at greening urban areas. The municipality of Moerdijk has nominated Fijnaart and Zevenbergschen Hoek for the 2024 grant year, as these villages are already working on greening plans. Greening plans and initiatives will also be implemented in the other villages and towns in Moerdijk in the coming years.
