De Niervaert Accommodations
New Construction: De Niervaert, Klundert
What's coming up?
The goal of this project is to build a new facility—consisting of a swimming pool, a sports hall, and a conference center—at the same location where the current Niervaert stands.
Where is this location?
What is the latest update?
The discussion about the future of De Niervaert in Klundert has been ongoing for years. On December 14, 2023, the council decided to build a new facility at the current location. The project initiation document was adopted on October 17, 2024. The council decided that the current functions and target groups would be retained and that four options would be developed. On March 13, 2025, the council decided to add an extra gym, a slide, and a whirlpool, but not a separate billiards room, a Finnish sauna, or a sixth lane in the competition pool. The cost estimate of €25,560,000 (excl. VAT) will be included in the 2026 Budget Framework Memorandum. On January 29, 2026, the council increased the budget allocation to €26,127,500. The subsidy received—partly from the European Union—in the amount of €10,100,000 from “Net op Zee – Gebiedsinvesteringen Nederwiek” will be used to partially cover this budget allocation.

The Netherlands is working toward a sustainable energy system, in which wind energy from the North Sea is playing an increasingly important role. To bring this electricity ashore, new connections and modifications to the power grid are needed. In our region, this involves connecting the Nederwiek wind farm via the Amer River to Geertruidenberg. A converter station is being built there to make the generated electricity suitable for connection to the national high-voltage grid. The European Union and the national government are providing funding to ensure this energy infrastructure is carefully integrated into the surrounding environment. With these funds, regions can invest in projects that benefit nature, the living environment, the regional economy, and the energy transition. The implementation of the Niervaert project is made possible in part by this funding.
