A Boost for Quality of Life in Klundert

What's coming up?

The vibrancy of downtown Klundert has declined in recent times. This has prompted the municipality to work with business owners and residents to develop plans to improve the situation:

1. The construction of the boardwalks along Botte Creek.
2. Plan for Voorstraat, Molenstraat, and Zevenbergse Poort.
3. Plans for De Doorsteek, the Westerstaat, and the supermarket expansion.

The downtown development is gradually taking shape. Given its scale and complexity, we have divided the project into three phases. The first phase involved the construction of the boardwalks, which has now been fully completed. Below is a description of phases 2 and 3.

Phase 2: Downtown Development of Voorstraat, Molenstraat, and Zevenbergsepoort

The second phase originally involved renovating Voorstraat, Molenstraat, and Zevenbergsepoort. At the residents’ request, the scope was expanded to include Kaai, Brugstraat, Molenberglaan, and Zevenbergsepoort up to and including the intersection with Walletje. This comprehensive plan will enhance the appeal of the city center. The design was developed in consultation with the residents.

In Klundert, work on three bridges was also planned for 2024 and 2025. This involves the replacement of the Brugstraat Bridge and the Blauwe Sluisdijk Bridge, as well as the renovation and reinforcement of the Kaaibrug (Hoogstraat). The Brugstraat Bridge and the Kaaibrug are located within the Phase 2 project area.

To ensure that construction proceeds in a sustainable manner and to minimize the impact on nearby residents, the bridge renovation and replacement work was carried out first and has since been completed. Phase 2 of the Klundert downtown development began in September 2025. 

Phase 3: Downtown Development—De Doorsteek, Westerstraat, and the Supermarket

Phase 3 includes “De Doorsteek” in the shopping center, the redesign of Westerstraat, and the expansion of the supermarket. This phase is linked to the Klundert Downtown Vision, which was adopted on January 30, 2025. This vision identifies several flagship projects, including the expansion of the supermarket in the southern part of Westerstraat. A feasibility study for this plan has begun.
