Construction Work on the Papendrecht Bridge and the New LPM Interchange
The Papendrecht Bridge (N3) is an important link between Papendrecht and Dordrecht and is part of the Drechtsteden transportation network. The movable section of the bridge is nearing the end of its technical service life and will therefore be replaced.
What's going to happen?
Rijkswaterstaat is replacing the bridge gate, the moving parts, and the technical systems for operation, control, and monitoring. In addition, the basement walls and the pier supporting the bridge gate are being reinforced. These improvements will ensure that the bridge remains safe and reliable for road and water traffic in the future.
Planning
Road Traffic
- July 17, 2026, through April 21, 2027: The Papendrecht Bridge will be closed to traffic.
Bicycle Traffic
- July 17, 2026, through April 21, 2027: The Papendrecht Bridge will be closed to cyclists. The bike path on the Baanhoek Bridge will also be closed during the construction work.
Shipping
- June 22, 2026, through August 31, 2027: The waterway will be closed to tall vessels (taller than 12.90 meters). However, passage options will remain available.
How does this make you feel?
During the construction work, the Papendrecht Bridge will be closed to road traffic. Rijkswaterstaat expects this to cause delays of approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Cyclists should also expect disruptions; their travel time may increase by 10 to 30 minutes.
In addition, large vessels on the Beneden-Merwede will experience disruptions due to the construction work for over 14 months.
Additional traffic disruptions in the region
In addition to the work on the Papendrecht Bridge, construction is also underway on the Moerdijk Bridge and around the new interchange at Moerdijk Logistics Park (LPM). This may lead to increased traffic and longer travel times, especially during rush hour.
