Court of Auditors
The Audit Office is an independent investigative body of the city council. Through its investigations, the Audit Office evaluates the performance of the municipal administration. The results of an investigation, along with the accompanying recommendations, are always presented to the council. The council can then instruct the Mayor and Aldermen to take a different approach to certain matters.
What does the Court of Auditors investigate?
The Court of Audit has the discretion to determine what it will investigate. For example, whether the municipal government’s actions deliver the intended results for residents (effectiveness), whether the same results can be achieved at a lower cost (efficiency), and whether laws and other regulations are being followed (legality). The Court of Audit supports the council members in their oversight role. It is, therefore, very important.
Who are the members of the Court of Auditors?
The members of the Court of Auditors have no (political) ties to the municipality in question. In 2023, the Court of Audit began its work with a new composition. It consists of: Chair Iroy Konings from Breda (Interim Clerk at Geerts & Partners), Renee Linck from Rotterdam (independent researcher for various organizations), and José van der Tak from Papendrecht (employed by the Ministry of Finance and a dual council member for the municipality of Papendrecht).
