Plastic packaging, cans, and beverage cartons

Plastic packaging, cans, and beverage cartons (PBD waste) are collected from your home every two weeks. You can find the scheduled collection day for your address in the waste guide. Collection routes begin daily at 7:00 a.m. If you place your PBD waste on the street later than that, there is a chance it will not be picked up.

Plastic bag or container

Do you collect plastic by the bag? If so, you must use special plastic collection bags for this purpose. You can pick these up for free at the collection points in your municipality.

Do you have a green bin with an orange lid at home? If so, you can put PBD waste in that bin. If you have a little extra one time, you can always place a bag next to the bin. Just be sure to use the special bags provided for that purpose, or another clear bag.

What can and can't be put in the collection bags?

By “plastic waste,” we mean plastic packaging materials such as bottles, vials, plastic bags, packaging for meat products and cheese, plastic films, tubes, and jars. Beverage cartons are the cardboard cartons with a plastic and sometimes an aluminum lining used for items such as juice, water, wine, milk, custard, yogurt, soup, and sauces. By “can waste,” we mean can packaging such as beverage cans, food cans, and aluminum lids, caps, and trays.

Can you answer YES to these three questions? If so, you’re eligible for the PBD:

1. Is it plastic, a can, or a beverage carton?
2. Does the packaging come from a household?
3. Is it empty?

It’s best to flatten empty bottles as much as possible by squeezing the air out of them, and to fold beverage cartons. Please place only plastic, cans, or beverage cartons in the PBD bin. Do not put any other waste in there, as this causes contamination and reduces the quality of the recycling process.

• Canned goods (such as soup or fish)
• Drink cans (note: returnable)
• Aluminum lids and caps
• Aluminum bowls (such as those used for cat food)
• Aluminum foil
• Completely burned-out tea lights (if there is any wax left in them, they should be disposed of with general waste)
• Plastic film from containers
• Screw-on lids
• Syrup Bottles
• Aluminum and plastic coffee cups (full and empty)
• Empty aerosol cans (such as deodorant and whipped cream)

Beverage cartons

• Beverage cartons are the cardboard cartons (with a plastic and sometimes an aluminum lining) used for, among other things: juices, water, wine, milk, custard, yogurt, soup, and sauces

The packaging does not need to be clean when you bring it in, but it must be empty.

What isn't it?

• Styrofoam from, for example, fast-food restaurants (recycling center)
• Plastic products and household items such as toys, inflatable pools, and patio furniture (recycling center)
• Small chemical waste (such as a full bottle of nail polish remover, caulk tubes, or a full bottle of turpentine) (recycling center)
• Empty paint cans (general waste)
• Diapers (general waste or diaper bin)
• Compostable plastic packaging (general waste)
• Construction or tarpaulin (recycling center)
• Fruit nets and other types of nets (residual waste)
• Christmas tree bag (general waste)
• Medical waste (residual waste)
• Shopper Grocery Bag (General Waste)
• Garden hoses and rope (bulk waste)
• CDs, videotapes, and audio cassettes (general waste)
• PVC (recycling center)
• Full packages (empty packages are allowed at the PBD)
• Large metal items (recycling center)

Second Life

Plastic waste can be recycled into items such as new plastic packaging, tennis balls, fleece sweaters, and toys. Tin cans are melted down and simply reused.
