Birth Registration

Within 3 days of your child's birth, you must register the birth with the municipality where your child was born. The registration must be completed by someone who was present at the birth. This is often a parent.

When submitting the information online, a statement from the midwife or the (family) doctor must be included. Other supporting documents, such as a donor statement in the case of a co-mother or proof of recognition of the unborn child, can also be submitted electronically.

If the last day falls on a holiday, you may file the return on the next business day.

If you are late in registering a birth, the municipality will report this to the Public Prosecutor's Office, and you risk being fined.

  • The mother (optional);
  • The father (is required); if that is not possible, then the person who was present at the birth.

To register a birth at the town hall counter, you must make an appointment. The registrar will then issue a birth certificate.

Please bring the following with you:

  • Your valid identification;
  • A valid form of identification for the mother;
  • If applicable, a marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate, so that the child can be added to it;
  • In the case of co-parenting (a child born within a registered partnership or marriage between two women, with an unknown donor): the statement issued by the Foundation for Donor Data on Artificial Insemination;
  • If the child was acknowledged before birth: the acknowledgment of paternity;
  • If applicable: the deed of name selection.

If the registrar has doubts about the accuracy of the birth registration, he or she may request a statement from the doctor or midwife who attended the birth.

From now on, parents of a stillborn child will receive a birth certificate. It will state that the child was stillborn. Effective February 3, 2019, a legislative amendment was enacted that makes it possible to include stillborn children on the parent’s family register. You can read more about this on the page “Registering a Stillborn Child.”

If the child dies within the three-business-day reporting period, the parents must file a report. In that case, both a birth certificate and a death certificate will be issued.
