Erecting a Memorial

You need a permit to install a memorial or commemorative plaque. The person entitled to the grave must apply for the permit. You must also submit a construction drawing.

If you have a grave at one of the municipal cemeteries, you must apply for a permit.

You can also make an appointment and visit City Hall in person. Please bring the following with you:

• A fully completed and signed“Application to Install a GraveMarker” form.

If you wish to place a memorial at a grave or a commemorative plaque, you will need a permit to do so.

Working drawing

The working drawing must include the following information:

• Top, front, and side views with all height, width, thickness, and length measurements;
• The type, color, and finish of the material to be used;
• The text of the inscription and the figurative element(s);
• The material used for the foundations and the method used to secure the monument to them.

Memorial

• Only sustainable materials may be used for the memorials;
• The length and width of the memorial (including the base and/or grave border) may not exceed the specified grave dimensions;
• The components must be securely attached to the memorial;
• A memorial without a cover slab or decorative plate always includes a concrete or natural stone border around the grave, custom-made to fit the assigned burial plot.

No memorial

Within six months of the burial or interment, the entitled party must notify the municipality that no permit will be requested for a grave marker. By doing so, the entitled party waives the right to install and maintain a grave marker. The municipality will then assume responsibility for maintaining the above-ground grave site. The costs associated with this will be billed to the entitled party.
