Error message from the Basic Registry of Persons (BRP)

If your personal data in the "Personal Data" section of the Basic Registry of Persons (BRP) is incorrect, it must be corrected or updated.

You can verify this yourself using the personal information found, for example, on municipal tax and fee assessment notices or on the Mijn Overheid website.

Terms and Conditions

If there is reason to believe that your personal data is incorrect, your information will be reviewed. This may be prompted by a report from an agency or a new resident indicating that someone no longer lives at the address where they are registered. In addition to address information, other data may also be reviewed. The most commonly reviewed data include the residential address and information regarding nationality.

To initiate an investigation, there must be a valid reason. To ensure the investigation proceeds smoothly, it is best to bring as many documents and pieces of evidence as possible that demonstrate that the personal data was not recorded correctly.

Good to Know

• The municipality will post a notice next to the relevant data stating that an investigation has been launched. The notice will also include the date the investigation began. The notice and date will remain posted for as long as the investigation is ongoing.
• During the investigation period, the municipality seeks to clarify the facts. This can range from requesting documents to gather evidence to requiring individuals who can provide information about the facts to appear. In the case of address investigations, various agencies are asked to provide information, among other measures. In the case of nationality investigations, information may be requested from foreign diplomatic missions (embassies and consulates).
• Once clarity has been established, the investigation is closed. If necessary, the data is then amended, naturally in accordance with legal provisions.
• You will be notified of this in writing.

File an objection

If you disagree with the decision (made at your request) to change your personal data, you may file an objection under the Basic Registration of Persons Act (BRP). If your objection is rejected, you may initiate an appeal with the court. In that case, please see the “Objection and Appeal” section.
