More about Helwijk
Helwijk traces its origins to Fort de Hel, founded in 1811. Helwijk was nothing more than a small hamlet along the Helsedijk. In 1954, the municipality of Willemstad at the time decided to establish a new village at this location because Willemstad’s historic status made expansion within the city limits impossible. The intention was for this new settlement to grow into the city of “Oranjestad” with more than 10,000 residents. However, this never happened.
The residents are actively involved in the life of Helwijk. There is a strong sense of community, and the town boasts a vibrant club scene. The community center, De Blokhut, is an important gathering place. Many clubs are based in this building. Since Helwijk’s 50th anniversary in 2004, a week-long festival featuring various activities has been held every five years.
