Apply for and Pick Up an ID Card

In the Netherlands, everyone 14 years of age or older must have their own form of identification. You must apply for an ID card in person at your local municipality. To apply for an ID card, you must make an appointment.

  • An adult ID card is valid for 10 years.
  • An ID card for children and young people under the age of 18 is valid for 5 years.

What to Bring for an ID Card Application

  • All of your original travel documents (ID card and passport), even if they have expired
  • If you do not have a travel document, please present another valid form of identification
  • A passport photo (taken within the last 6 months). Please review the requirements on the Dutch government's website.

Please note: If you have a physical or mental disability and are therefore unable to apply for your ID card in person, a municipal employee can come to you to process your application. The municipality will determine whether or not you need to come in person. For more information, call 14 0168.

Apply for an ID card for a child under 12 years of age

Please bring the following with you when you apply

  • The child himself or herself, even if it is a baby. The child must be present both when the application is submitted and when the child is picked up.
  • At least one parent or guardian must be present when submitting the application and must bring a valid form of identification; the other parent(s) or guardian(s) do not need to be present if they have given their consent online in advance using their own DigiD. Please note: Onlineconsent is valid for 4 weeks.
  • All of the child's passports and/or ID cards, even if they are no longer valid.
  • A passport photo taken within the last 6 months that meets the requirements of the national government.
  • Payment: You can pay by debit card at City Hall. (Credit cards are not accepted.)
Granting Permission with DigiD

If you are unable to do this using DigiD, you can also download and fill out the consent form. In this case, the legal guardians must present their original forms of identification at the service desk.

When you come to pick it up, please bring the following with you

  • At least one parent or guardian must be present at pickup and bring a valid form of identification.
  • The child must be present when being picked up.

Costs

  • For a person 18 years of age or older (valid for 10 years) : €80.10
  • For a person under 18 years of age (valid for 5 years) : €43.20
  • Emergency surcharge: €60.30
  • (Home) Delivery €19.00

We ask that you pay by debit card.

Urgent Request

Do you have an appointment and need your ID card quickly? If you submit an expedited request before 2:00 p.m., you can usually pick up the card the next business day. Have you lost your old ID card? In that case, the expedited request will take longer. There is an additional fee for expedited requests.

Children must always carry their own passport or ID card when traveling abroad. Are you traveling abroad with your children? Do you have different last names? If so, this may cause problems during passport control at the airport. You’ll need proof that you are the father or mother, or that you have parental authority.   • The ID card becomes invalid as soon as you report it lost. If you find it later, it can no longer be used. Return it to the municipality for destruction.
  • Have you lost your ID card and are you planning to travel? Apply for an emergency passport at or near an airport or other border crossing. For more information, visit the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee website.

Your ID card can be delivered by appointment. Your passport can be delivered to any address in the Netherlands (with the exception of the Wadden Islands). This means you no longer need to pick up your document.
