Applying for and Picking Up a Passport
To travel abroad, you need a valid form of identification. A passport is valid worldwide. A passport can also be used as a form of identification within the country, for example, if you want to open a bank account.
You are a Dutch citizen. Apply for a passport at the municipal office where you live. A parent cannot apply for a passport on behalf of a child or children. Bring the child or children with you to the municipal office.

What to Bring for a Passport Application
- All original travel documents (ID card and passport) in your possession, even if they have expired;
- If you do not have a travel document, please present another valid form of identification;
- A passport photo (taken within the last 6 months). Read the requirements on the Dutch government's website.
- You pay by debit card.
Picking Up a Passport
Please note: If you have a physical or mental disability and are therefore unable to apply for your passport in person, a municipal employee can come to you to process your application. The municipality will determine whether or not you need to come in person. For more information, call 14 0168.

- For a person 18 years of age or older (valid for 10 years) : €88.65
- For a person under 18 years of age (valid for 5 years): €67.05
- Emergency surcharge: €60.30

Applying for a passport for a child under 18
Please bring the following with you when you apply
- The child himself or herself, even if it is a baby. The child must be present both when the application is submitted and when the child is picked up.
- At least one parent or guardian must be present when submitting the application and bring a valid form of identification; the other parent(s) or guardian(s) do not need to be present if they have given their consent online in advance using their own DigiD. Please note: Online consent is valid for 4 weeks.
- All of the child's passports and/or ID cards, even if they are no longer valid.
- A passport photo taken within the last 6 months that meets the requirements of the national government.
- Payment: You can pay by debit card at City Hall. (Credit cards are not accepted.)
If you are unable to do this using DigiD, you can also download and fill out the consent form. In this case, the legal guardians must present their original forms of identification at the service desk.
When you come to pick it up, please bring the following with you
- The child must be present when being picked up.
- At least one parent or guardian must be present at pickup and bring a valid form of identification.
- Children 12 years of age and older may also pick up their passport on their own.
Good to Know
- An adult passport is valid for 10 years;
- A passport for children and young people under the age of 18 is valid for 5 years.
- When applying for a passport, you must provide two fingerprints. This requirement does not apply to children under 12 years of age.
- If you travel frequently and accumulate a lot of stamps in your passport, your passport will eventually become “full.” Be sure to apply for a new one in plenty of time. To prevent your passport from expiring, there is a “business passport”—a regular passport with more pages for stamps.
Need a passport quickly?
Need a passport quickly? Submit an expedited application before 2:00 p.m. Your passport will usually be ready for you the next business day.
Children must always carry their own passport or ID card when traveling abroad. Are you traveling abroad with your children? Do you have different last names? If so, this may cause problems during passport control at the airport. You’ll need proof that you are the father or mother, or that you have parental authority. - The passport is invalid as of the moment you report it lost. If you find it later, it can no longer be used. Turn it in to the municipality for destruction.
- Have you lost your passport and are you planning to travel? Apply for an emergency passport at or near an airport or other border crossing. Information is available on the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee website.
Be sure to bring the following:
- All original travel documents (ID card and passport) in your possession, even if they have expired;
- If you do not have a travel document, please present another valid form of identification;

In addition, you must provide supporting documentation to demonstrate that you are eligible for a second passport. This can be done using your current (second) passport by analyzing your travel history (stamps, visas, and the like). If this is not possible, other supporting documents may be requested. For example: proof of a trip booked to a country that, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ list, is in conflict with a country for which a visa is held in the first passport; or a trip booking combined with proof from a foreign mission indicating that a passport is with them for visa processing.
There are a few requirements for applying for a second passport:
- You regularly visit different countries, and the stamps in your passport may cause problems when entering another country.
- You regularly travel to countries that require a visa, and you do not have your passport available in time. For example, if your passport is at that country's embassy.
- Your first passport is valid for at least another 6 months.
- You must provide supporting documents to prove that you are eligible for a second passport. This can be done by analyzing the travel history (stamps, visas) of your current (second) passport, or by submitting other supporting documents. For example: a booking for a trip to a country that conflicts with a country for which a visa is listed in the first passport (list from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Or a booking for a trip combined with a letter from a foreign mission confirming that a passport is on file at the embassy.
Your passport can be delivered by appointment. Your passport can be delivered to any address in the Netherlands (with the exception of the Wadden Islands). This means you no longer need to pick up your document.
